Team Canada is excited to once again compete in the Commonwealth Cup Dance Championships (CCDC). The CCDC is an event that takes the best dancers from the Commonwealth Nations to compete. The commonwealth is a biannual event on the odd years. 2017 and 2019 were held in South Africa, but 2021 will be in AUSTRALIA! Prepare to join us now!
We will hold auditions so keep checking back with us or contact us to be put on the list. Also, studios may bring a group of their own dancers as well. Please contact us if this is something that may interest you.
CCDC is a DANCE CUP competition. This means that it is run more like our competitions, where you dance once and are awarded placement. We will still be awarded on the podiums. Overall dancers will compete in the final DANCE-OFF at the GALA on the final day of competition. There are awards for everyone, including ribbons, medals and/or trophies, and cash awards for top 3's. Dancers may enter in any genre they wish and may dance as often as they want. Entry fees are separate. Workshops are available from renown dance educators from around the Commonwealth.
THE DIFFERENCE: The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS we regularly attend are considered the "Olympics of Dance". Each nation can only bring 3 of their top athletes for a week of intensive competition in one genre. The competition is fierce, unlike any other! The CCDC will be bringing together many of the same dancers to this competition, but they will be allowed to bring more dancers that can dance in more categories. Dancers from Canada, Gibraltar, Australia, South Africa and Malaysia have gone head to head for first place many times!!
A Choreographer's Creative Process in Real Time | Wayne McGregor | TED Talks
We all use our body on a daily basis, and yet few of us think about our physicality the way Wayne McGregor does. He demonstrates how a choreographer communicates ideas to an audience, working with two dancers to build phrases of dance, live and unscripted, on the TEDGlobal stage
Team Canada Dance is taking dance teams to Monterrey Mexico, but you may also enter your own studio or dance independently from the our team. For more information on how to do this, please contact Bonnie@cdo-online.org

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN TRAVLE ARRANGEMENTS!!

The Competition and Workshops take place July 19-25, 2021 in Monterrey, Mexico
*a decision will be made Feb. 1, 2021 to determine whether COVID-19 situations & restrictions will allow for an international competition in July, 2021.
This is a World Cup, sanctioned by IDO. This means that you can enter as many disciplines as you wish - we are not limited to 3 entries per nation like the World Championships.
All Performing Arts disciplines include:
Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, Show Dance, Acro, and Ethnic/Folk! These categories are run like our own competitions, where a dancer dances once and is placed. Video Judge will be used.
Streetdance includes:
Hip Hop, Electric Boogie (Popping), Breakdancing, Disco, and Streetdance Show. These categories are done IDO style where dancers dance in a elimination/battle format. This will be recorded but no Video Judge commentary will be available.
Ballroom includes:
Salsa Couples, Salsa Groups, Merengue, Discofox/Hustle. These will be competing with IDO rules. This will be recorded.
Entry fees will be available soon.

What is Street Dance Show?
Canada took a team to the IDO Streetdance Show Championships in 2018 for the first time ever, led by Leon Blackwood and Breanna Willis in Ontario. The Canadians not only did well, but impressed the European officials in the process! We are hoping to return to this competition with both a BC and ON team in Italy this year!
Canadian Silver Medalist: Alexis Lorette
Canadian Adult Small Group: The Agency
Here are examples of competitors at the 2018 IDO World Hop Hop Championships.
These championships are straight Hip Hop (HH), Electric Boogie, and Breakdance. Competition is done in BATTLE form except the formations.
Examples from the Hip Hop
Adult Hip Hop Group: from Canada 2019
Adult HH Group (not crew): from Poland
Adult HH Formation: from Slovenia
Junior HH Formation: from UK
Adult Male HH battle: from Germany
The Hip Hop Championships is straight up Hip Hop, Electric Boogie (Popping) and Breakdancing. Everything is done in battle with organizers music except for the formations.
The Streetdance Show uses Hip Hop to tell a story. Dancers use their own music for all routines.
Both competitions use elimination rounds and the winners are awarded on the podium.
