The International Dance Organization (IDO), is a World Dance- and Dancesport Federation consisting of OVER 90 member and contact NATIONS, representing more than 500,000 DANCERS, from all SIX CONTINENTS.
Do you want to DANCE WITH THE BEST, and participate in the many CHAMPIONSHIP AND WORLD CUP EVENTS, then contact your National Federation for information on its qualifying events.
Team Canada Dance/IDO Canada is the National Member Organization (NMO) in Canada
The IDO World Championships brings together the TOP 3 of each nation to compete for their place on the podium! It is called the OLYMPICS OF DANCE.
Dancers compete in elimination rounds until the top 6 compete one last time for the GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE awards.
In the Street Dance categories, such as Hip Hop, Breakdance and Electric Boogie, crews battle for their placements. Only the formations compete with their own music.
The International Dance Organization (IDO) was founded as a non-profit organization on September 18, 1981 by Mr. Moreno Polidori, in Florence, Italy. The original founding member nations were Italy, France, Switzerland and Gibraltar. Mr. Polidori was appointed General Secretary and drew up the original statutes, by-laws and rules that governed the organization.
At that time, the main purpose of the organization was to provide Continental and World Championship competitions to both amateur and professional dancers, in all forms of dance, not covered by the World Dance & Dance Sport Council, the International Dance Sport Federation and the World Rock 'n Roll Confederation.
In 1990, Mr. Polidori took contact with the International Council of Ballroom Dancers (ICBD), which later became the WD&DSC, to apply for affiliated membership. He had a meeting with Mr. Rudi Trautz, Germany, who was then a Vice President of the ICBD, to present the IDO and the ideas behind the IDO. Mr. Trautz saw the great advantage for the ICBD to have the IDO under its umbrella and suggested at the ICBD AGM 1991, to form an affiliation committee in order to get an affiliation contract formulated. Mr. Nils-Hakan Carlzon was elected the chairman of this committee and also serving was Borge Jensen, Denmark, Wolfgang Steuer, Germany and Fred Bijster, Holland.
The Committee met with Mr. Polidori in July 1991, in Milan, Italy, and after two days of negotiations the affiliation terms were set, and in 1992, at the ICBD GM, the IDO became affiliated to the ICBD. During the following years Mr. Carlzon and Mr. Polidori developed a deep and friendly relationship and Mr. Polidori often mentioned that he would like Mr. Carlzon to become his successor.
In 1996, in order to insure the continued growth of the IDO, Mr. Polidori appointed a seven member commission to reconstruct the structure of IDO. Mr. Carlzon was selected to head this committee and each of the seven members was given a task to rebuild the Constitution, its By-laws and its Official Rules Book. After many meetings, both in person and through the Internet, a modern, new IDO began to take shape.
Just two years after the committee was formed, a new IDO was presented at the Annual General Meeting, which included new Statutes, By-laws, Rules Book and a proposal that the seven member commission be elected as the IDO's first Presidium. After some opposition from the "old school", the new Presidium was elected in October, 1998. At this meeting a President, Senior Vice President, Executive Secretary and four Vice Presidents were elected. Each of the Vice Presidents serves as directors of the various IDO departments. In 2003, the presidium added two new Vice Presidential positions making the presidium nine members strong.
Following an IDO Presidium meeting decision in December 2003, Mr. Carlzon met with the President of the IDSF, Mr. Rudi Bauman, in Bern, Switzerland, in 2004 to finalize the terms of affiliation to the IDSF and sign the contract. The Agreement was accepted by the IDO and the IDSF, AGM's, respectively, later in 2004, and the IDO then became, through its affiliation with the IDSF, a part of the IOC family.
Since the new presidium took office, the IDO has increased its membership to well over 60 nations and contacts. and every indication shows that its future growth is eminent.
The IDO is now not only involved with the granting of Continental and International Competitions and Championships, but is deeply involved with many aspects of our dance industry. It is constantly striving to improve the quality of its dancers, through participation, its adjudicators through education, and national member images by being involved with the largest dance organization in the world. The various disciplines, through their committees, are convened on a regular basis to ensure that the IDO rules are always current and up to date with its membership wishes.
THE AMERICAS is a Department of the I.D.O. that networks professionals in the dance industry through educational programs, workshops, conventions, and dance competitions.
The mandate of the “The Americas Continental Conferences” is to promote unification of dancers worldwide through IDO World Competitions, workshops and conventions. We hope to foster good relations between all countries and dancers and promote good sportsmanship worldwide.
In part, the initiative of this department is to introduce the rest of the world to the North and South American world of dance. Out of this, the first IDO World Dance Challenge was created, being hosted in Monterrey, Mexico.

If you are looking for a stress free, well-organized dance competition with wonderful awards and a fun and encouraging dance competition for your dancers of all ages and levels, then we invite you to attend.
The Canadian National Dance Championships (CNDC) is committed to the dance industry, including dancers, teachers, and choreographers. Bonnie Dyer was the original founder and has many years of experience as a studio owner, director, teacher, and most importantly, as a dance parent. Bonnie also has the honour of being appointed the Canadian representative for the International Dance Organization (IDO). The current director for the last 10 years of CNDC is Alison Sharp-Dyer ensures that the competition experience is both well-organized and fun as well as backed by an experienced adjudication staff well versed in every discipline they are judging.
CDNC dance competitions are family friendly and offer dancers the opportunity to perform and learn in a structured and exciting atmosphere. We are backed by a dedicated and friendly staff and hardworking volunteers. We ensure that each participant has a positive experience and that all of their hard work is recognized and appreciated. Our adjudicators are never local and have a diverse multi-disciplined dance background. They are often studio owners, teachers or dance professionals that come from across Canada and the United States. Each regional averages $5,000 in cash scholarships.
CNDC will not be qualifying dancers straight to team as we have in the past because we have felt that it was the best interest for all to qualify at auditions, but will be hosting auditions during some of their regional competitions. We will have some Golden Tickets which will be awarded at selected competitions to give dancers a Free Audition or Straight To Team of our approval.

The Commonwealth Cup Dance Championships (CCDC) is an international partnership to unite a family of dancers from all Commonwealth Nations for the common purpose of dance education, while displaying good sportsmanship and fostering friendship.
Team Canada is excited to once again compete in the Commonwealth Cup Dance Championships (CCDC). The CCDC is an event that takes the best dancers from the Commonwealth Nations to compete. The commonwealth is a biennual event, 2017 and 2019 were held in South Africa, but due to Covid-19, the next CCDC will take place in AUSTRALIA has been postponed! Prepare to join us now and we will update you when new dates are confirmed.
We will hold auditions so keep checking back with us or contact us to be put on the list. Also, studios may bring a group of their own dancers as well. Please contact us if this is something that may interest you. Team Canada Dance is intending on taking teams to Australia. We will take ALL GENRES.
CCDC is a DANCE CUP competition. This means that it is run more like our competitions, where you dance once and are awarded placement. We will still be awarded on the podiums. Overall dancers will compete in the final DANCE-OFF at the GALA on the final day of competition. There are awards for everyone, including ribbons, medals and/or trophies, and cash awards for top 3's. Dancers may enter in any genre they wish and may dance as often as they want. Entry fees are separate. Workshops are available from renown dance educators from around the Commonwealth.
THE DIFFERENCE: The IDO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS we attend are considered the "Olympics of Dance". Each nation can only bring 3 of their top athletes for a week of intensive competition in one genre. The competition is fierce, unlike any other! The CCDC will be bringing together many of the same IDO dancers to this competition, but they will also be allowed to bring more dancers that can dance in more categories. Dancers from Canada, Gibraltar, Australia, South Africa and Malaysia have gone head to head for first place many times!!
If you were a member of the 2017 or 2019 Team Canada Commonwealth, we would love to see your pics - please submit to Melissa or Bonnie.

Due to the pandemic cancellations of all in-person events, IDO hosted a fun Continent vs Continent Online Dance Competition in all three IDO Departments: Performing Arts, Street Dance, and Couples/Ballroom. IDO awarded cash awards in Euros to the Gala finalists.
There were 4 rounds to the event that we participated in:
IDO Canada accepted entries from dancers across Canada in all genres. Certificates were sent to everyone and finalists were awarded. We held a Round 1 with everyone and a Round 2 with our Canadian Finalists. The Judges were our IDO friends.
Our Canadian finalists in all three IDO Departments competed against the USA for a chance to represent North America in the Final Continent vs Continent round. Certificates were sent to the winners.
Finalists from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Oceana, and Africa competed. The top winners from a POPULAR VOTE (from around the world on FB) each of the three IDO Departments went on the the Final Gala for a chance to win Euros.
The top dancers from Round 3 compete for cash.
